the river cafe

We had an utterly magical time at The River Cafe last night. If your ever in the area, it's located at the edge of the Brooklyn Waterfront, at Water Street, directly under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The food, service and view were outstanding and the amazing flowers at the entrance and outside so breathtaking. We had a lovely dinner by the waterfront and a great time. What a way to spend your anniversary!

Exploring Red Hook

Sunday, we spent the morning at Brooklyn Flea and then headed over to Red Hook for some lunch and exploring...I had a Connecticut Style Lobster Roll (warm lobster with butter) and John had his Maine Style (with mayo). Both were from Red Hook Lobster Pound. Want to know the difference with the two styles? Read about them here.

Later, we took a stroll to some of the shops along Van Brunt Street in Red Hook. We ate a decadent Sweet & Salty (grey sea salt + caramel cupcake) at Baked. I've been dying to try one since I saw Baked co-owner Matt Lewis on the Martha Stewart show eons ago.

I really enjoyed taking time to explore Metal + Thread a gift shop/art gallery full of beautifully curated items. Mostly forged metal and handmade, the entire shop was filled with so many exciting treasures - from the old tools, jewelry, patchwork quilts and felt mobiles, I just loved the sensibly and care put into the selection of items available. John bought a beautiful hand forged bracelet by local blacksmith, Marsha Trattner.

Next up, we headed over to Fort Defiance for some late in the day cocktails. I had a wicked good Bloody Mary and John went for a Barbados Buck. Named aftera fort built during the Revolutionary War in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Brooklyn.

Their brunch and dinner menu looks amazing, unfortunately, after the lobster rolls and a parking ticket, our wallets were looking a little thin. Excited to come back here sometime soon for some deviled eggs and red beans on toast.

Renovation: Almost Done!

Hope everyone had a lovely Labor Day holiday weekend! The weather in New York was divine!!!

John and I spent the weekend making various visits to our new place - with a late night trip to Ikea thrown in for some good stress-inducing measure. It seems as if some of items we had delivered from there had essential pieces missing from their boxes and we needed to return to the store to get replacements.

This week is going to be exceptionally busy - we have the floors downstair getting their second coat of polyurethane, the appliances are being delivered on Thursday, along with a big delivery from the Container Store (Elfa Shelving!!!)  and Friday the movers will be there!

The kitchen covered in lots of sawdust and minus the appliances & cabinet hardware.

Standing in the kitchen, here's the view of the living/dining room. The door on the left is a powder room and there's a fireplace on that opposite wall.

View of the fireplace (covered in plastic to protect it from the floorstain) and the spiral staircase that leads up to the second level.

Our master bath - almost completed. These shots show the shower, all covered in subway tile with dark grout, penny tile on the floors (still yet to be grouted in these pix) and black wainscotting along the lower walls. We have a pedestal sink and the exposed shower plumbing being installed this week.

And here's a shot of the sconces and medicine cabinet that will go above the pedestal sink!

We're both really excited to finally move on in and live back in Brooklyn. We've been living in a small studio apartment in Manhattan for the past month and are starting to drive one another crazy! So excited to sleep in my own bed, make pancakes for our first breakfast and just finally relax!!

I'm off to finish up a few last minute shopping details - will let you know how the move goes and try to keep things under control. Inspired Goodness is working on a small event for Weddingbee this weekend - so its sure to be a crazy few days.

Promise when we're up and running in our new digs to start sharing more frequent posts with all of you.

Moving Day!

Please excuse the very horrible lack of posting around here. Last Thursday, I spent all day trying to finish packing our stuff for the movers to come on Friday morning.

We ended up staying up till Midnight - we were both exhausted but had to wakeup at 6AM on Friday - and get the last few things packed up. The movers showed up a bit early and took about an hour and a half to get all of our stuff out.

As they took boxes out, I tried to capture a few great shots of the place. The light in the morning that crept into the kitchen was always so lovely.

The movers loading our stuff into the van.

We had piles of boxes stacked up to the ceiling in our dining room...

When they got there at 8, we still had some last minute boxes to tape up.

Some essentials we left out to accompany us to our temporary home...

I have to admit that moving out of this apartment was really hard to do. It was the first place we found together and decorated ourselves. There are countless amazing memories I have spent in the apartment - surrounded by family and friends.

The day of our wedding, John and his groomsmen got ready there and we have these amazing photos of the guys celebrating and getting ready, all captured by Brian Dorsey Studios. There's a lot of great reasons for us to be excited to plant roots into our new place. For one, we own it - we're responsible for a mortgage and deciding every bit and piece that goes into the overall design. Having a place of our very own has always been a dream of ours and I really do look forward to the day we are finally moved in and settled.

But for now, I can't help but be a little sad as to what we said goodbye. It was really an apartment that I loved and was the first place in New York City that truly felt like home.
