September 20, 2010 DIY: Glue Gun Wax Seals
I used this technique a few months back to make a large amount of wax seals for a wedding invitation suite and thought it was a great time-saver worth sharing in a small DIY tutorial.

After purchasing my selected seal design, I just assembled simple tools (glue gun, wet paper towel and aluminum foil) and went to work. Glue Gun Wax is very easy to work with, is available in a large assortment of colors and can be used with any standard glue gun. You just want to make sure you carefully clean out the wax when completing your project so it doesn't colorize any glue gun projects you have in the future.
- Step 1: Insert your selected Glue Gun Wax into a warmed up glue gun
- Step 2: Push trigger on glue gun and pour about a dime size dollop of wax onto foil

- Step 3: Insert your seal into the center of the dollop. Press down and leave for approx. 30 seconds

- Step 4: Gently pickup your brass piece, seal will need some additional time to set so be careful not to touch it.
- Step 5: Clean off brass piece by gently wiping with moistened paper cloth.

- Step 6: Repeat steps 1-5 until you have enough seals completed for your project.
- To finish: We recommend using round seals on the backside of each waxed piece. It's sticky on two sides and will firmly affix your seal to the finished paper.

So you don't put the wax directly onto the paper? In essence this becomes a wax sticker? I was always under the impression that if you use a low-temp gun, it would not damage the paper beneath when directly applied.
Hi Kerry,
To answer you question, yes, making the seals this way will actually produce a wax "sticker". It allows some room for error since not every seal you make will end up coming out absolutely perfect. Plus, it's easy to make a really large amount in a short period of time - the seals dry all at the same time and when you affix the round seal to the backside, it's becomes a sticker.
Loooooove! I am dy-ing. These are incredible.
YAY! Thanks for posting this - I'm actually getting ready to try my hand at wax seals for the first time and will definitely be going this route instead.
Thanks for this demo. I recently had some bought for me from www.mappamundi.co.uk but had no idea how to make them look so good. I think the gun makes all the difference.
Great idea!
This is awesome. I can't wait to try this one out on my own!
I'm confused.. shouldn't you melt the wax directly on the envelope? Thats how I always use the wax seal. I love the idea of the glue gun melter though! will look into it!
This is so helpful! I am thinking about doing this for my wedding invites. Where can I buy the materials needed?
